The brief for this project was to give the family a place of refuge and relaxation by accommodating a variety of programatic elements. This involved: dedicating areas for entertaining family and friends, gardening, relaxing and children’s exploratory play; curating and expanding the existing plant collection; and creating a stronger connection between interior and exterior, while providing privacy. The hardscape palette consists of weathered Ipe, Steel and Bluestone, which acts as a backdrop for seasonality of the planting and the ephemeral and improvised play of the occupants.
Conditions: Shady back yard with several existing trees and a slight upward gradient.
Requirements: Reorganize the long narrow space to suit changing needs.
Context: A brownstone in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.
